Why Do I Need an Echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram is a non-invasive, painless procedure that allows your physician to see your heart in action. During the test, a conducting gel will be used with a transducer to capture images, sounds, and video of your heart working. It can help your doctor detect any malformations or damage to your heart. Your doctor may order an echocardiogram if you have experienced chest pain or shortness of breath, if you have unexplained episodes of syncopa (fainting spells), if you have a heart murmur, and many other reasons, including to monitor congenital heart defects.
How Long Does an Echocardiogram Take?
The average echocardiogram takes less than an hour. The average echo will take between 30 and 45 minutes. This includes the prep time required to get you properly positioned, apply the conductive gel, and complete the monitoring.
How Do I Prepare for My Echocardiogram?
There is no special preparation required for an echocardiogram. You will be asked to remove all of the clothing and jewelry from the top half of your body, and most likely you will be asked to lie in 2-3 positions throughout the exam to obtain all of the necessary imagery. You can immediately resume normal activity after the exam.
How Soon Will I Get the Results of My Echocardiogram?
Your physician will review the images normally within 24-48 hours. An echocardiogram can be used to detect leaky valves, heart tissue damage, blockages, and other complications that contribute to the symptoms you may be having. In some cases, further testing may be necessary, such as an ambulatory electrocardiogram – a test that’s performed while you are walking around and carrying out your normal daily activities; it helps to detect abnormal heart rates and rhythms
